The Chinese had many forms of medicine and massage several millennia ago. When the Japanese interacted with them, they learned these techniques, and then improved upon them to develop the newer shiatsu massage therapy. You may have heard of the shiatsu massage chair which is becoming popular, and now you can learn a little more about this growing method of massage.

What is Shiatsu?
The word Shiatsu actually describes the method. Interpreted, it simply means finger (shi) pressure (atsu). This form is similar to the more familiar western styles of massage. According to the history of Shiatsu, Tokujiro Namikoshi developed the original form of Shiatsu, around 1912, from a trial and error basis. He had no actual traditional Chinese medical training, although some forms of it have since been brought in.

Shiatsu has a definite Zen basis, at least in the oriental versions. The Orientals look at medicine differently than the Western world, and from it we learn that doctors, over there, had more of a preventive practice, than a remedial one. Their job was to ensure the health of their practitioners, for which they paid, but when they got sick - they were treated for free.

What Is the Purpose of Shiatsu
The oriental goal of any traditional Chinese medicine (and its Japanese counterparts) is basically to bring about a balance of forces (yin and yang) in the body, and thus to help the body to heal itself. This is accomplished by reestablishing the flow of Qi (Chi). In more modern English, we are more inclined to say that Shiatsu is used to create a general sense of well being and relaxation. It is useful in bringing relief caused by certain conditions that range from generally poor health, or stress, to specific injuries.

While Shiatsu can be used to bring relief to many different things, there are a few things in which it is often used. Here are some of the more common:
back pain
many kinds of headaches, including migraine
asthmatic problems
limited mobility
menstrual pain
various digestive problems
sports injuries

What Happens In A Shiatsu Session?
The techniques of the Shiatsu giver vary - depending on how close they are to the original Shiatsu techniques. If they are a strict adherent to the original, then you can be sure that they will only use their fingertips - to press, hook, pinch, roll, rotate, vibrate, pat, and other things. They simply apply pressure in various ways to the common meridian points (also referred to as acupuncture points), as many as 300 of them. The average session will last from 40 minutes to an hour.

Diagnosis and Application of Pressure

A foot massage benefits the whole body. The foot has many thousands of nerve endings which are stimulated during a massage. There is even a whole system of pressure-point therapy practiced on the feet, called reflexology, which works by pressing with thumbs or fingertips on specific zones to boost corresponding organs, glands, and body areas. Each foot contains 28 small bones and long tendons running down from the leg muscles to the toes.

Take her right foot out of the bowl and enfold it in a warm towel. Gently pat her foot to dry it thoroughly and place it on your knee. Make sure your partner's leg is relaxed and the knee flexed.

Spread oil or lotion on the leg and start the massage with a series of smooth, flowing strokes on the lower leg to warm and relax the muscles responsible for moving the toes. With your fingers pointing to your partner's head, sweep your hands one after the other over the front of her leg to just below the knee. Glide your hands to the back of the leg and, molding them into the calf, pull them gently down to the back of her ankle. Sweep your hands around the ankle and repeat the stroke in an unbroken motion four times to boost lymph and blood circulation.

Now do three flowing sequences of fan-stroking up the leg from the ankle to just below the knee in much the same way as fan strokes are performed on the thigh area. Make sure that your hands fully encompass the shape of her leg, so that as they fan out and around, your Fingers stroke down behind the calf muscles before returning to the front of her leg. Feel her calf muscles ripple and loosen beneath your strokes.

Support the ankle with your left hand and apply pressure to. the fingers of your right hand to stretch into the tissue along the outer ridge of your partner's shin bone. As it reaches the knee, sweep it back down behind her leg while your left hand repeats the motion on the inner ridge of the shin bone. As each hand reaches the back of the heel, slide your fingers firmly around the ankle bone before your hand ascends the front of the leg. Repeat the sequence three times.

Knead the muscles on the back of her leg by placing your right hand over her calf, gently lifting and squeezing the flesh between your fingers and heel and then releasing the pressure. Knead down the leg from just below the back of her knee to the Achilles tendon of the heel.

The ankles bear the pressure of the whole body weight and are put under strain when there are problems with posture. Stiff ankle joints inhibit movement and can make the whole body feel unsupported from ground level. Soaking the ankles in warm water and then massaging them to ease tension held around the joints will increase suppleness in the feet and bring relaxation to the whole body structure, including an aching back. Use the Fingertips of both hands to sweep deftly around and around the outer edges of the ankle bones. Then lightly cup your hands behind her ankle so your fingers are interlaced. Use your thumb pads to massage thoroughly, one thumb following the other in small outward moving circles over the front of the ankle. This movement is made by rotating the base thumb joint and is more effective if pressure is applied on the upward and outer half of the circle, with a softer glide back. Once you have massaged the sides and front of the ankle, stroke all around each side of her heel with tiny fingertip circles, using both hands simultaneously.

Rub a little more lotion between your hands and slide both hands, fingers pointing toward the ankle, over the instep. Circle your Fingers around her ankle bones and pull your hands back down the sides of the foot to her toes so that your fingers stroke firmly along the sole of her foot. Repeat this movement four times without breaking the flow of motion and feel how her foot softens and warms beneath your touch.

Rest her heel in your right hand and place the fingers of your left hand under the sole of her foot. Rotate the heel of your hand all over the outer half of the instep and along the outside of the heel while your fingers simultaneously massage the sole of her foot. Then hold the foot in your left hand and massage in the same way on the inner side of the 'instep and heel with your right hand.

Toes, which are usually cramped and tense, appreciate a gentle stretch combined with move- ment and massage. Start with the little toe and clasp it above and below the base joint with your thumb and index Finger. Gently rotate the first joint three times in both directions and then slide along to the top joint and wiggle it up and down. Go back to the base joint with your thumb and finger and pull firmly but sensitively along the toe. Give a firm squeeze to the tip of the toe before snapping your fingers out of it. Repeat these movements on the other toes. You will need to swap the position of your hands to stretch along the last two toes.

The skin on the sole of the foot is usually quite thick, so increase the pressure of your strokes as you massage its surface. Rest the heel of her foot in your left hand. Now clasp the foot with your right hand so that your fingers lie across the instep and your thumbison the sole, just below the flat of the heel. Move your thumb in short, firm strokes, one slide following another, to cover the area from the heel to the base of the toes. Then make a loose fist with your hand and grind your knuckles in small semi- circular actions all over the sole, keeping a check that the pressure is not too hard.

Light feather-stroking down the leg and foot with your fingertips, one hand overlapping the other, will give the massage a stimulating skin- teasing finish. To increase the skin sensation even more, gently rake over the top of her foot with your fingernails. Then cradle the foot between your hands for several moments.

Dry the left foot, remove the bowl, and repeat all of the above strokes. When you have finished the massage, lift both feet to rest the soles softly on the Surface of your stomach. Breathe into your abdomen and imagine that you are sending your breath out into your partner's feet. She will enjoy feeling the rise and fall of your midriff as you breathe beneath her feet.

Swedish massage Therapy: One of the Most Popular in the World

Despite its name, Swedish Massage does not have its origins in Sweden, nor was a Swede its creator. In fact, there is no such thing as "Swedish Massage" in Sweden, and in Europe, this system of massage is known as Classic Massage. However, in America, Swedish Massage is thought to be the most basic and classic forms of massage techniques, while the term Classic Massage is hardly ever used. As a matter of fact, in the United States, Swedish Massage, also known as Massage Therapy, is the most popular form of massage that people opt for.

While some sources credit Per Henrik Ling, a Swedish gymnastics instructor and fencing master, for founding the techniques of Swedish massage in 1812, other sources refute this assertion. This is because Swedish massage did not form a part of the curriculum of the Royal Central Gymnastic Institute that Henrik Ling founded nor was it in evidence in his Swedish Gymnastic Movements. It is thought that it was because Ling called his gymnastic movements ‘Swedish Gymnastic Movements’ that these were somehow misunderstood to be the Swedish Massage System.

In fact, according to researchers who have studied the origins of both gymnastics and massage, it was Johan Georg Mezger, a Dutch, who lived between 1838-1909, who adopted the French names to describe the basic strokes, which he systemized into the Swedish Massage System that is known today.

The massage therapist, formerly known as masseur or masseuse, usually uses massage lotion or massage oil during the process. The client is usually covered with a sheet of cloth, and as the therapist systematically moves from one part of the body to another, the part of the body that is done is covered up.

When a full body massage is given, it usually starts on the back, and then moves down to the legs. Then the client will be asked to turn around and lie face up. Then the front of the arms, neck, abdomen and legs are massaged. A session usually lasts for 40-90 minutes.

Swedish massage is the most popular type of massage in the United States. It involves the use of hands, forearms or elbows to manipulate the superficial layers of the muscles to improve mental and physical health. Active or passive movement of the joints may also be part of the massage. The benefits of Swedish massage include increased blood circulation, mental and physical relaxation, decreased stress and muscle tension, and improved range of motion.

Unlike drug therapy, which is often associated with many systemic and long-term side effects, massage therapy is relatively safe and has few contraindications. It also provides many benefits.

There are numerous physical benefits associated with the use of Swedish massage:

In Swedish massage, the person to be massaged lies on a massage table and is draped with a towel or sheet. It is a full-body massage treatment, except in areas that are contraindicated or where the client requests not to be touched. Aromatic or unscented oil or lotion is used to facilitate the massage movements. Each session usually lasts 30-60 minutes. Depending on the client's preferences, a massage session may involve the use of several or all of the following basic techniques: effleurage, petrissage, friction, vibration, and tapotement.

Effleurage is the most common stroke in Swedish massage. It is a free-flowing and gliding movement towards the heart, tracing the contours of the body using the palm of one or both hands. Oil is applied with this stroke to begin the first stage of massage. The therapist applies a light or medium constant pressure. This stroke is used to warm up the muscles, relax the body, calm the nerves, improve blood circulation and heart function, and improve lymphatic drainage.

This technique resembles kneading dough. It involves lifting, rolling, and squeezing the flesh under or between the hands. Petrissage is designed to release muscle tension, improve blood flow, and increase lymphatic drainage.

Friction strokes work on deeper muscles than the techniques previously described. The friction technique is a pressure stroke and is the deepest that is used in Swedish massage. The massage therapist applies pressure by placing the weight of his or her body on the flat of the hand and the pads of the thumbs, knuckles, fingers, or the back of the forearms, and then releases the pressure slowly and gently. This movement should be a continuous sliding motion or a group of alternating circular motions.

To effect vibration, the massage therapist gently shakes or trembles the flesh with the hand or fingertips, then moves on to another spot and repeats this stroke. Vibration is designed to release muscle tension in small muscle areas, such as those on the face or along the spine.

Tapotement, or tapping and percussion, is a quick, choppy, rhythmic movement that has a stimulating or toning effect. The following are variations of tapotement:

Cupping: The therapist forms the hands into a cup shape with fingers straight but bending only at the lower knuckles; the thumbs are kept close to the palms. The therapist strikes the flesh with the flat of the hands one after another in quick succession.
Hacking: This technique is similar to cupping. The therapist uses the sides of the hands with palms facing one another to make a chopping movement.
Pummeling: For this stroke, the therapist makes loose fists in both hands and applies them rapidly in succession over the thighs and buttocks.
Tapotement techniques are invigorating to most people but may be too strong for some. When prolonged, tapotement leads to overstimulation and even exhaustion of the nerves and muscles. In addition, it should not be used over varicose veins or directly above bony structures.

Swedish massage requires the following equipment:

Massage surface: This may be a professional massage table or any firm but well-padded surface.
A clean sheet to cover the part of the body that is not massaged.
Cushions: These may be needed, depending on the client's wishes, to prevent lower back pain. The cushions may be placed under the head and the knees.
Oils: The base oil should be a vegetable oil, cold pressed, unrefined, and free of additives. These oils contain such nutrients as vitamins and minerals in addition to fatty acids. They do not clog the pores as mineral oils often do. Essential (aromatic) oils may be added to provide additional relaxation or other therapeutic effects. Massage oil should be warmed in the therapist's hands before it is applied to the client's skin.
Swedish massage should not be given to patients with the following physical disorders or conditions:

nausea, vomiting or diarrhea
broken bones, fractures, dislocations, or severe sprains
contagious diseases
open or unhealed sores or wounds
body areas that are inflamed, swollen or bruised
varicose veins
recent surgery
severe pain
kidney disease
large hernias
torn ligaments, tendons, or muscles
high blood pressure or heart problems
certain kinds of cancer
history of phlebitis or thrombosis (These patients may have blood clots that may become dislodged and travel to the lungs, with potentially fatal results.)
drug treatment with blood thinners (These medications increase the risk of bleeding under the skin.)
Some clients with histories of physical violence or abuse may feel uncomfortable about removing their clothing or other aspects of massage. A brief explanation of what happens in a massage session and how they can benefit from massage is usually helpful.

There have been few reported side effects associated with massage of low or moderate intensity. Intense massage, however, may increase the risk of injury to the body. Vigorous massage has been associated with muscle pain and such injuries as bleeding in the liver or other vital organs, and the dislodgment of blood clots.

Swedish massage is now gaining acceptance from the medical community as a complementary treatment. Studies have shown that massage can relax the body, decrease blood pressure and heart rate, and reduce stress and depression. It may also provide symptomatic relief for many chronic diseases. Many doctors now prescribe massage therapy as symptomatic treatment for headache, facial pain, carpal tunnel syndrome, arthritis, other chronic and acute conditions, stress, and athletic injuries. Many insurance companies now reimburse patients for prescribed massage therapy. As of 2000, however, Medicare and Medicaid do not pay for this form of alternative treatment.

There are 58 school programs accredited by the Commission for Massage Therapy Accreditation/Approval in the United States. They provide a minimum 500 hours of massage training. Certified therapists have graduated from these programs and passed the national certification examination for therapeutic massage. They are also required to participate in continuing education programs to keep their skills current.

There are several national associations for massage therapists in the United States, including the American Massage Therapy Association and the National Association of Nurse Massage Therapists. Persons interested in massage therapy should contact these organizations for referral to local certified therapists.

Massage can be one of the most relaxing and stress relieving gifts to give yourself or someone you love. Few activities result in such a feeling of physical and emotional well being at its culmination. But for those giving the massage – the massage therapist – an hour-long massage can be incredibly grueling work. If you consider the amount of strength and energy it takes to massage several people a day, you can certainly understand the level of care a massage therapist must take to protect their own health. A full schedule of massage several times a week can be unbelievably strenuous for the massage therapist and, if they are not vigilant, can result in injury.
Depending on the type of massage being offered, the massage therapist will work with their client to release specific points of stress throughout the body. Whether it’s the lighter, longer strokes of Swedish massage or the more intensive kneading of deep tissue massage, the massage therapist must seamlessly adjust their level of touch to fit the client’s particular needs. Further, the massage therapist surely wants their last client’s massage to be just as effective and enjoyable as their first client of the day. It takes an enormous amount of stamina to maintain this high level of effective massage. Some massage therapists – because of the work associated with massage – begin to experience back pain from bending over, sore joints and muscles, or carpal tunnel syndrome. It is not a career without its risks and these risks must be managed on a daily basis. The proactive massage therapist will not overbook their day and will schedule enough recuperation time between clients. During this “down time” the massage therapist can do some stretching to relieve muscle tightness and give joints a rest. Maintaining appropriate posture during a massage can also be helpful in minimizing back pain. Additionally, a good massage therapist will also become an avid massage client. They recognize that they must treat their own bodies as well as they do their clients if they are to continue giving a massage that is in demand.

Immersion Bath:- In this type of hydrotherapic treatment whole body is immersed inside the water with head remaining outside. Effect obtained by Immersion bath can be modified by giving friction during the bath or by adding some salts having analgesic effect eg:- Mg So4, Nacl2. This gives fast relief in painful condition. This type of treatment increase blood circulation all over the body and enhance activity there by helping in elimination of toxins.
Jacuzzi:- This also same type of treatment as immersion bath only the difference is made by pressure forced inside the water during bath.
